Out of Bounds

For high school students who excel in sports there are a variety of opportunities at colleges and universities to continue their sport and pursue a degree in higher education at a reduced cost.  Student athletes who meet the institution’s academic criteria may be given preference during the admission process, and may be offered athletic scholarships or comprehensive financial aid that reduces the cost of education.  With the perpetual rise in the cost of education, financial assistance is beneficial particularly to lower income families who can’t afford to send their children to the nation’s top universities.
In the District of Columbia there is a broad talent pool of high school athletes that attracts college and university sports programs.  Yet only a small minority of high school students receives scholarships or financial aid based on their athletic merit.  The majority of students are unaware of how to make themselves available for these opportunities.  To make themselves available for these opportunities, students must meet the academic criteria for a broad range of colleges and universities, and showcase their athletic abilities to as many coaches as possible.
The Out of Bounds program is designed to increase the number of student-athletes eligible for admission to institutions of higher learning and financial assistance based on athletic merit.  The program accomplishes this by providing workshops and activities that:
  • Provide exposure to the variety of college level academic and athletic opportunities available across athletic associations and divisions;
  • Transform the way in which students understand high school academic eligibility;
  • Teach students how to showcase their athletic abilities and maximize their exposure to college coaches.
Additionally the program helps student-athletes understand the long term professional benefits of sports.  Many values and characteristics cultivated in sports are attractive to employers, and are indicative of successful entrepreneurs.  Also the relationships that are established within the context of sports can be invaluable assets along the path toward a successful career.
The Out of Bounds program targets DC Public School high school freshmen and sophomore student-athletes.  Through a series of workshops and comprehensive college visits hosted by current university student-athletes, high school athletes gain an in-depth understanding of the demands and expectations for collegiate academics and sports.  Early exposure to the demands and expectations of college sports allows high school student-athletes to determine if they want to pursue sports beyond high school.  Furthermore early exposure helps student athletes better prepare to pursue their goals, and minimizes confusion about the college admission and sports recruiting process.
